Wairarapa, Martinborough, Wine Tasting

Galileo described wine as 'sunshine held together by water'. We picked for vineyards and sampled in order from white to rose to red and then dessert wine and bought one of a favorite at each stop. The girls sampled a lot of ice cream. When Meghan was here in the mid 1980's there was no wine industry and now New Zealand wine is known world wide. It all started with their Sauvignon Blanc becoming popular in England. It was interesting as Old World wines (eg French) made quite a nice Sauv Blanc but labeled it for the vineyard it came from (not the type of Grape). But NZ labeled their wine Sauv Blanc after the type of grape which helped the customers figure out which one to buy and so it was popular. Now since 1987 there is an average of 20 new wineries per day

"Wine improves with age..the older I get, the better I like it. "

One of the vineyards we went to Ata Rangi's has 1/3 of its vines from the so called gumboot clipping. It was found by an customs inspector in a boot that someone was trying to smuggle a Pinot Noir clipping from France. It was confiscated, mysteriously sidestepped quarantine and ended up being passed along to this vineyard.

Hannah after an afternoon of wine tasting with Mom and Dad...honestly she only had a few sips!
