South Island 04/09 Otago Peninsula Sandfly Bay

Another tramp..this time at dusk. We are after the rarest penquin in the world...the yellow eyed penquin which comes in from the sea after feeding all day to sleep in the sand dunes. This Refuge is staffed almost full time by volunteers who ensue that the visitors keep their distance from the shy penquins.
Here are two sea lions on the beach. They look remarkably like logs until you are up close

Evening picnic in the penquin hide.

Here's a penquin in the hill hopping slowly up for a night's rest.

Then we saw one come right out of the water. Then looking all around to see if it is safe, it waddles up the sand and into the dune. We were all in awe. h
